Andrew Jackson Davidson Portrait

The 2019 Andrew Jackson Davidson club members were the first students to participate in the club. This amazing group of students chose to hang the portrait of Andrew Jackson Davidson in the Athens County Courthouse. Andrew Jackson Davidson was the first practicing Black attorney in Athens Ohio. However, his portrait was never hung in the courthouse along with his colleagues, who were all white

This group held an event at Athens Middle School which included speakers and performances. The group attended the hanging of the portrait the next day.

West State Street Angel Statue Restoration

The West State Street Angel is a statue that resides in the West State Street Cemetery near the entrance gates. This beautiful statue was a gift from the Athens High School class of 1924The statue represents the lives of the unnamed soldiers buried in this cemetery, many of them Black. The statue is said to be haunted, making it the subject of many national "haunted" lists and articles.

Unfortunately, the statue has fallen into disrepair over the years. In collaboration with Andrew Chiki, the Athens Deputy Service Safety Director, The Andrew Jackson Davidson club plans to restore the statue and hold an event to celebrate. This will occur in late sprig, 2021.
